BEAUTY SPECIALIST
As a mature students and a mother of 4 children, I was quite apprehensive when I first started the Beauty Specialist course at MIFET. For a start, it was a complete career change for me, as well as worrying if I would be able to juggle my home life with college life. However, it didn't take me long to settle in, as the tutors and students were all helpful and friendly. There was a lot more theory, case studies and assignments than I had expected, but as the weeks went by, I found that everything started to fall into place. Now two years later, not only do I have an ITEC Diploma and a FETAC award, but I also have my own business. I have opened my own home salon and have received a great response from friends and neighbours. I am now in a position to care for my family and work from home thanks to MIFET.

Diploma in Hairdressing
I decided after leaving school to take up Hairdressing becaujse I always had an interest in it. I really enjoyed my time at MIFET, the tutors were great and I made many new friends. I also loved dealing with members of the public when I was out on work placement. My work placement employer decided to offer me a full time job so now I work at Cecil's Hairdressers, Monaghan where I am working with colour, styling and developing my confidence and speed in cutting. I also intend to continue updating and learning new skills by attending the occasional short part time course.

Healthcare Support
After leaving school I worked for a few years in catering and retail managment. I also spent a yeear in Australia and during my time there I began to develop an interest in following a career where I could help vulneralbe people in some way. On my return, I decided to do the Heatlth Care Support course at MIFET. The course provided training in a broad range of caring areas. We touched on Child Development, Special Needs and Home Care, enabling me to work with children and the elderly. The MIFET teaching staff were very helpful and I really enjoyed work placement which was fulfilling as I got an opportunity to put the theory I had learned in class into practice. I worked in the Holy Family School, Coothill and also with Alzheimer's patients in St Mary's, Castleblayney. Through this I now get work with the Louth Co Hospital, as I am on their panel of healthcare workers on call. I am very glad I chose Healthcare Support because it opened up a broad range of job opportunities for me. I am currently studying for a degree in Social Care at Dundalk IT.
