Applications for a higher education place are made using the standard CAO form. At present there are thirty three higher education institutions including universities, institutes of technology and private colleges who offer places on a variety of courses to students that are eligible to progress from FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 and Level 6) to higher education courses.
In general, the Leaving Certificate is not an absolute requirement, so students with Leaving Certificate Applied or mature students who complete the appropriate FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 Award can apply for a third level place using this scheme. In some courses, specific modules are required by the institutions as part of the FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 Award. In addition to the Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) which links specific FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 Awards to reserved places on higher education courses, the Institutes of Technology and some higher education institutions have introduced new pilot admissions criteria and scoring systems for FETAC (NCVA) Level 5 and Level 6 Award applicants for CAO entry.
